Message from Sepsis Research FEAT on Northern Ireland Sepsis Awareness Campaign 2025

Following on from a contribution that he made to a debate in Westminster Hall in the autumn of last year, Robin recently met with representatives from the charity Sepsis Research FEAT. The debate covered the public health issue of sepsis and a widely accepted need for greater awareness and UK-wide initiatives to improve diagnosis and treatment.
Sepsis Research FEAT is the only charity in the UK to fund research and raise awareness of sepsis. The team approached Robin because they perceive a particular need in Northern Ireland for a localised sepsis awareness campaign. The charity plans to undertake a Northern Ireland specific campaign in June of this year. Via social media and press and mainstream media, the campaign will inform the public about symptoms and the action that should be taken if sepsis is suspected. A second wave of activity is planned for September 2025 during Sepsis Awareness Month.
In the UK as a whole there are around 250,000 cases of sepsis every year, of which around a fifth result in the death of the patient. Statistically sepsis is responsible for a greater loss of life annually than breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined. Many survivors experience significant long-term outcomes which necessitate reliance on ongoing health and social care and impede their ability to work.
The charity works hard to improve outcomes for sepsis patients and to save lives – you can read more here. Prior to their campaign, the team at Sepsis Research FEAT would be pleased to hear from anyone who has been affected by sepsis and would like to share their story. Contact can be made via the charity’s website here.
