No More Delays on Antrim–Lisburn Rail Line says Swann

South Antrim MP Robin Swann has called for firm action, not further delays on the strategic rail review and has welcomed a £1m investment in the project.

Mr Swann recently wrote to the Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins seeking an update on the review, particularly in relation to the reopening of the Antrim-Lisburn (Knockmore) railway line, which would reconnect Antrim, Lisburn, and the villages in between, while also providing a direct link to Belfast International Airport.

In her reply, the Minister confirmed that feasibility studies, including on the Knockmore Line, have now been completed by Translink, and that she intends to publish a summary report “later in the autumn.”

Mr Swann said:

“This line would quickly become vital piece of infrastructure for South Antrim. Reconnecting Antrim and Lisburn - and the communities in Crumlin, Glenavy and Ballinderry in between, and would transform local connectivity and bring real social and economic benefits.

“I welcome the £1 million ring-fenced funding for the studies that has been provided by the Minister to keep this project moving forward, but it remains long overdue. This line has been talked about for years, and it is now time we saw real progress.”

Mr Swann added that the project could bring huge opportunities for local business and tourism.

“Improved rail links would be a huge boost for local employers and for our tourism sector. An efficient connection to the International Airport would also create new opportunities for business growth across Northern Ireland.”

Mr Swann also warned that a lack of visible progress risks undermining confidence in the process. He said:

“Time and time again we’ve been told to expect updates in ‘the summer’ and then in ‘the autumn’. We are now November -quickly heading towards the end of autumn - and yet the Minister has again told me to expect publication of feasibility reports “later in the autumn.” We need clarity and commitment, and we cannot let another season go by without action.”

Mr Swann said he would continue to press both the Department for Infrastructure and Translink to ensure that the Knockmore Line remains a key priority for investment and delivery.
