South Antrim MP Robin Swann has launched a consultation on sport development and provision for the constituency. Over the next eight weeks, Mr Swann will be asking sports clubs and teams of all kinds from all corners of the constituency to complete a questionnaire on the challenges and opportunities their clubs are facing, the work that needs to be done to better support local sports, and how to improve access to sport for the local community.

As the launched his consultation, Mr Swann said:

“Both through my role as MP and in my previous role as Health Minister, I know the huge benefits of sport for people’s mental and physical health, as well as the value sport can add to bringing communities together and building friendships, as well as tackling anti-social behaviour and loneliness.

“Our local sports clubs are facing a significant range of challenges due to access to facilities, funding and accessibility. But there are just as many brilliant opportunities for these clubs. That’s why ensuring the right support and provisions are in place here in South Antrim to let these teams and clubs thrive.

“I’m looking forward to engaging with clubs on what can be done to build, grow and promote sport here in South Antrim, and I encourage all clubs to get involved with this piece of work to ensure all voices, sports and clubs are represented.”

Following the eight-week consultation window, Mr Swann plans to host representatives from the local clubs involved in the consultation to discuss the findings, agree the key areas and issues which need focus and addressed, and work to create a South Antrim Sport Development Plan which will be used to lobby councils, Stormont and Westminster to deliver the provisions, investment and support needed.
