Swann Attends Digital ID Debate
South Antrim MP Robin Swann attended the Westminster Hall debate in opposition to the planned introduction of Digital ID. The recent petition opposing the policy gathered nearly three million signatures from across the United Kingdom and 4,500 from South Antrim.
Intervening in the packed debate, Mr Swann asked:
“Does he agree that this is one of those unusual circumstances in which this Government have managed to unite every party in Northern Ireland on a single issue, and in opposition to the proposal?”
The debate saw the Westminster Hall chamber full and there was standing room only for many MPs. Following the debate, Mr Swann has written to the Chair of the Petitions Committee to ask that he consider a follow up debate in the main Commons chamber to ensure every MP who wishes to participate in the debate has the opportunity to do.
Mr Swann has also written to the Government in opposition to the any introduction of digital ID and has signed an Early Day Motion calling for the policy to be scrapped.
