Swann Backs Campaign to Protect Airport Staff from Workplace Abuse

South Antrim MP Robin Swann has met with representatives from Unite the Union, including frontline representatives from Belfast International Airport, to offer his backing to the union's national "Abuse Doesn't Fly" campaign.

The campaign highlights the unacceptably high levels of verbal abuse, intimidation and physical aggression experienced by airport and airline workers across the United Kingdom. Recent survey findings from Unite revealed that 78% of Belfast International Airport ground staff surveyed report experiencing verbal abuse at least monthly, with 94% having witnessed a colleague being abused.

To demonstrate his support, Mr Swann signed Early Day Motion 639 in Parliament, which calls for stronger protections, clear industry-wide standards and coordinated powers for airports and airlines to ban repeat disruptive offenders.

Mr Swann said:

"No worker should ever have to accept abuse, threats or intimidation as part of their job. The frontline staff at Belfast International Airport and across the sector perform a vital public service, working hard under demanding conditions to keep passengers moving safely.

"The survey figures presented by Unite representatives are alarming, with an overwhelming majority of staff witnessing or experiencing abuse on a routine basis. This issue demands serious, coordinated action across the entire industry and from Government.

"I was pleased to meet with Unite representatives and sign the Early Day Motion in Parliament to back their call for a worker-led approach, tougher enforcement, and better support for staff. We must ensure our airport workers receive the protection, respect, and safe working environment they deserve."
