Swann Calls for Swift-Friendly Homes

South Antrim MP Robin Swann has written to the Minister of Finance, John O’Dowd MLA, urging the Department to consider introducing nature-friendly features, such as swift bricks, into Building Regulations for new homes.

Swifts, cavity-nesting birds that are a priority species under Northern Ireland law, have seen significant declines in recent years. Robin Swann highlighted that similar proposals have been debated in the House of Lords. These proposals aimed to require swift bricks in new houses taller than five metres and Mr Swann has called for these measures to be introduced in Northern Ireland.

Mr Swann said:

"Swift bricks are a simple, low-cost solution that can make a real difference for these declining birds.

"While planning policies provide some protection, incorporating biodiversity measures into Building Regulations would ensure all new homes support wildlife."

The MP has asked the Minister of Finance whether his department is considering guidance or requirements within Building Regulations to encourage swift bricks or other nature-friendly features, and whether future updates could include such measures to protect priority species.

Mr Swann added:

"This is a small change that could have a big impact. Supporting nature in our built environment benefits our communities and our wildlife."
