Mr Swann recently met with the owners of Brown's Coffee Co. and Café Roo to discuss the sustainability of local coffee shops. During the visits, business owners detailed the severe impact of rising operating costs, specifically the surging prices of core ingredients, energy bills, and staff wages. These overheads are creating a significant challenge for businesses attempting to keep prices down for local customers.

Following the visits, Mr Swann said:

"I want to sincerely thank the teams at Brown's Coffee Co. and Café Roo for welcoming me and for the work they do daily. Independent cafes are essential to our high streets, but they are currently under immense pressure. The current Hospitality VAT rate is a major strain on our local cafes, pubs and hotels. I am backing the proposal for a trial reduction to 10% in Northern Ireland to support the sector against rising costs and to aid in cross-border competition.

"In recent years, we have seen huge increases in the costs of core supplies, fuel and wages. This is a massive challenge for owners who want to keep their prices affordable for the public. There is a clear need to increase footfall on our high streets, and I will be working to do what I can to make this happen and ensure our local businesses can thrive."
