South Antrim MP Robin Swann has joined with Labour MP Alex McIntyre to challenge the Government over post-Brexit trade barriers facing the eel fishing industry. In a joint letter to the Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, Dame Angela Eagle MP, Mr Swann and Mr McIntyre have requested an urgent meeting with the Minister, alongside other interested MPs, to discuss export options under the current SPS agreement.

The issue is of local significance to Mr Swann due to the world-renowned Lough Neagh eel industry, which is a historic trade within his South Antrim constituency.

Robin Swann MP said:

"The Lough Neagh eel industry has a reputation of heritage and quality. It is essential that we protect the livelihoods of those who depend on this industry. I have also been engaging closely with the Lough Neagh Eel Fishermen’s Co-operative to address the specific pressures they face as the current export situation is unsustainable.

"Working alongside Alex McIntyre and other concerned MPs, we are pushing the Minister to explore every available avenue to ease these trade barriers. We need a solution that recognises the unique nature of this sector and ensures our local fishermen can continue to access vital international markets."
