South Antrim MP Robin Swann has expressed his disappointment following a response from DEFRA regarding the movement of racing pigeons from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
The Minister confirmed that DEFRA cannot provide further details on the ongoing UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement negotiations. Additionally, legislative arrangements to ensure the free movement of the birds are not expected to be in place until 2027.
Robin Swann MP said:
"The lack of progress from the Department is very frustrating for our local racing pigeon community. Fanciers have been left in limbo for too long by these post-Brexit restrictions and telling them that a solution could take until 2027 will not bring any comfort.
"I am disappointed by this continued delay and will continue to press DEFA to accelerate these talks well ahead of the next UK-EU Summit, and I have requested a meeting with Baroness Hayman to discuss this issue further."
