Swann Seeks Assurances Over Screwworm Threat

South Antrim MP Robin Swann has sought assurances from the Government to ensure that biosecurity officials are alert to the threat of New World screwworm, a parasite that can cause huge damage to livestock.

In response to questioning from Mr Swann, Farming Minister Stephen Morgan confirmed the welcome news that there have been no recorded cases in the UK. He also revealed that no discussions have yet taken place at a Ministerial level between DEFRA and DAERA in Northern Ireland, but gave assurances that officials are working together behind the scenes.

Robin Swann MP said:

"While it is good news that there are no cases here, we cannot be complacent. The livestock industry is hugely important of our local economy in Northern Ireland, and both DAERA and DEFRA have a duty to support it

"I want to see direct communication between Ministers at DEFRA and DAERA to make sure our border protections and response plans are ready and watertight.”
