Swann Urges Tougher Sentencing for Tool Theft

South Antrim MP has backed calls for tougher sentencing on power tool theft and has asked the Justice Minister what plans are in place to address the issue in Northern Ireland.

The Ulster Unionist MP said:

“Earlier this week I was pleased to support an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill in Westminster which sought to have the theft of tools from tradespeople as an aggravating factor.

“Unfortunately, the amendment did not pass, but it has drawn attention to this very important issue.

“The theft of power tools from vans and sites are costing small businesses and self-employed contractors in Northern Ireland thousands of pounds and is a very pressing issue for these businesses and our rural communities.

“With this type of theft as an aggravating factor, it was hoped that the result would be tougher sentencing and a cut back in the sale of stolen tools.

“I have written to Just Minister Naomi Long to urge her to ask what plans or intention she has to introduce similar measures in Northern Ireland.”
