South Antrim MP Robin Swann has welcomed a commitment from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council to resolve ongoing issues with rural bin collections on the Steeple Road between Antrim and Kells.

In response to an intervention by Mr Swann, the Council confirmed that route sheets have been adjusted and contractors have been spoken to directly to ensure wheelie boxes are no longer missed.

In addition to fixing the immediate collection issues, the Council has pledged to immediately review its Rural Needs Impact Assessment. This follows an admission that the assessment was not fully completed during the initial development of waste projects.

Robin Swann MP said:

"I am pleased that the Council has listened to the frustrations of local residents on the Steeple Road and taken practical steps to fix these missed collections. Rural households pay their rates like everyone else, and they deserve a reliable service.

"I welcome the Chief Executive’s commitment to review their impact assessments immediately to ensure that the needs of rural communities are taken fully into consideration.”
