Swann Welcomes Progress on Northern Ireland Aviation Strategy
Robin Swann MP has welcomed confirmation from the Economy Minister that work is under way on a Northern Ireland Aviation Policy, following his recent correspondence calling for a clear, strategic approach to air connectivity.
The South Antrim MP has been pressing for an aviation strategy to provide direction for Northern Ireland’s airports and to set out the Executive’s priorities and ambitions for air travel, investment and connectivity.
In her response, Minister Archibald confirmed that her Department is drafting an Aviation Policy to provide strategic direction for the future development of air connectivity. The proposed policy will focus on route development, including transatlantic flights, support for the wider aviation and aerospace sectors, job creation, regional development and environmental sustainability. A public consultation is expected to be launched in the coming months.
Mr Swann said:
“Northern Ireland relies heavily on good air connectivity for inward investment, tourism and business growth. A clear aviation strategy is overdue, and I welcome the Minister’s confirmation that work is now under way.
“A properly developed aviation policy can help grow routes, support jobs and ensure that all parts of Northern Ireland benefit from improved connectivity. It should also recognise the importance of environmental responsibility.”
“I will continue to engage with the Minister to ensure this policy is ambitious, practical and delivered without unnecessary delay.”
