Swann Writes to DAERA Minister Over Asian Hornet Concerns
South Antrim MP Robin Swann has written to DAERA Minister Andrew Muir following confirmation that the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has identified an Asian Hornet in Northern Ireland.
Mr Swann said the sighting will cause “understandable concern” among local beekeepers and environmental groups, warning that the invasive species poses a serious threat to native honeybees and local hives.
In his letter, Mr Swann asked the Minister to outline what support and advice are being provided to local beekeepers, what assessment has been made of the threat to hives and how the Department intends to respond in the absence of a dedicated Bee Inspector.
Mr Swann added:
“Northern Ireland’s beekeepers play a vital role in supporting both agriculture and biodiversity. They need timely information, reassurance and practical assistance as this situation develops.”
The MP has called for an update on the monitoring and containment measures being put in place.
