Marking 80th Anniversary of VE Day
Marking 80 Years since VE Day, South Antrim MP Robin Swann said:
“Across the United Kingdom this week, communities have come together to celebrate 80 Years since VE Day, marking the end of World War Two and the defeat of Fascism in Europe.
“It was humbling and a huge privilege to be able to represent South Antrim and the Ulster Unionist Party in a procession from Parliament to Westminster Abbey for the remembrance service. Joining the Speaker, the Prime Minister, Party Leaders, Privy Councillors and a small delegation of MPs, we walked the route that Churchill walked, as Parliament followed, in 1945.”
Mr Swann also paid tribute to the significant contribution that Northern Ireland made to the war effort:
“While we remember the celebrations of VE Day and the smashing of the fascist threat, we must also remember those who served, we should never forget Northern Irelands contributions, from those in the Armed services, those who kept the nation fed and safe. Our manufacturing industry, including the torpedo factory at Massereene Barracks, went a long way in making victory possible.”
The South Antrim MP concluded:
“May we never forget those who sacrificed so much to make victory in Europe possible.”
