The red telephone box on Chapel Road in Glenavy is set for a new lease of life after being formally transferred into local council ownership.
The move follows work by Ulster Unionist Representative Jay Buntin and Robin Swann MP.
Progress on the transfer had previously hit a snag due to an administrative mix-up by BT, who were attempting to negotiate with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council instead of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (LCCC). Following intervention from UUP reps, BT established contact with LCCC, allowing the transfer process to move forward smoothly.
LCCC has confirmed that the kiosk has now officially been transferred to council ownership. Over the coming weeks, council officers will assess the physical condition of the phone box and undertake necessary maintenance before opening a public consultation after the summer to explore community-led uses for the landmark.
Jay Buntin, UUP Representative for Killultagh DEA, said:
"This red phone box is a stand-out icon on the Chapel Road, and it was really important that we don’t see it fall into further disarray. It’s fantastic news that the transfer to LCCC is now complete. I'm really looking forward to working alongside the local community after the summer to help turn it into a brilliant asset for Glenavy."
Robin Swann, MP for South Antrim, added:
"Community ownership of local landmarks like this gives areas a real chance to preserve that character while creating something useful for residents. I’m delighted that we were able to help get this back on track with LCCC. I look forward to seeing the creative ideas the local community brings forward during the upcoming consultation."
