South Antrim MP Robin Swann has co-signed an amendment aimed at ending the injustice where military compensation significantly reduces the means-tested benefits received by veterans.
The amendment to the Armed Forces Bill, tabled by Josh Babarinde MP, calls on the government to review the merits of disregarding payments from the War Pension Scheme and Armed Forces Compensation Scheme when calculating entitlements to benefits such as Pension Credit.
Under current rules, veterans who receive military injury compensation can see their Pension Credit heavily reduced because the Department for Work and Pensions treats the compensation as standard income.
Robin Swann MP commented:
"This is a real issue that constituents have raised with me directly, and it is entirely wrong that veterans who have been injured serving their country are being penalised for receiving the compensation they need to live with their injuries.
"I am proud to back this amendment which aims to force the government to look at the merits of changing these rules. The Treasury should not be clawing back the support awarded to veterans for their service and sacrifice."
