Robin Swann MP has challenged the Department for Infrastructure over a significant parking fine error related to Granges Street in Ballyclare. While the Department has long repeated that it has no responsibility to maintain the road or repair a large pothole that caused significant disruption to local businesses, it has emerged that they have been actively fining people for parking on the same stretch.
Information obtained by Mr Swann revealed that the DFI issued fines to fourteen motorists on this unadopted stretch of road. Following his intervention, the Department has now admitted the error and is in the process of issuing refunds to the affected drivers.
The South Antrim MP is now seeking further clarification on whether similar mistakes have occurred on other unadopted roads and further information on the guidance provided to traffic wardens.
Following the revelation, Mr Swann said:
“DFI is wrong to abdicate any responsibility to maintain a road whilst also collecting revenue from the people who use it. While I welcome the fact that fourteen drivers are now being refunded, this error should never have happened in the first place.
"My focus now is on securing a permanent, long-term solution for Granges Street. The businesses and residents of Ballyclare deserve a road that is fully adopted and fit for purpose so that future maintenance can be addressed properly and permanently."
