Swann says business attacks must stop

South Antrim MP Robin Swann has strongly condemned the recent targeting of local businesses in Ballyclare, warning that violence and destruction of property only serve to tear communities apart.

Reflecting on the important difference between immigration policy concerns and the unlawful targeting of local people, Mr Swann said:

"The recent attack in North Belfast was barbaric, and people are understandably concerned and angry. I fully acknowledge these legitimate concerns and defend the right to peaceful protest, but the subsequent violence and destruction of property is completely unacceptable. These actions will leave innocent people feeling threatened and unsafe.

"It is clear that the government needs to do more to address concerns regarding illegal immigration and improve vetting on asylum claims, my party holds a zero-tolerance policy on illegal immigration. However, legal immigration plays a hugely important role in our local communities, especially in our health service.

"The targeting of the iMAJ Turkish Barber in Ballyclare was particularly concerning. Attacking local businesses only tears our community apart. The team behind the barber shop have made Ballyclare their home for nearly 30 years. They have built families and a business, paid their taxes, and go to the local pub. They are a threat to no one and are a valued part of the town.

"The government must listen to community concerns, but violence will only undermine these efforts. If you have concerns, please raise them peacefully. Attacking local businesses causes nothing but division, hurts law-abiding people, and I urge everyone to remain calm and reject this violence."
