South Antrim MP Robin Swann has expressed serious concern regarding a spike in anti-social behaviour along the Six Mile Water in Antrim, warning that the tampering with life-saving equipment could lead to a tragedy.
The move follows reports that local anglers and water bailiffs discovered that life ring stations on the Race Trail near Kirby’s Lane had been interfered with, with equipment removed and thrown into the water. The area has also seen an increase in littering, drinking and suspected drug use.
Robin Swann MP said:
"The reports I have received from constituents regarding the deliberate interference with life rings at the Six Mile Water are deeply alarming. These are essential pieces of emergency equipment that exist to save lives.
"We have seen the heartbreaking news recently of ten young people drowning across the UK during the current heatwave, so we must do all that we can to avoid any similar tragedy locally. I am urging young people to stay safe and asking parents to ensure their children understand the risks of entering the water as well as the vital role these rings serve.
“I have been engaging with the PSNI and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council to highlight these concerns. We need to see a coordinated approach to tackle the anti-social behaviour to ensure no family in has to face a preventable tragedy."
