South Antrim MP Robin Swann has contacted police and council following reports of e-scooters being operated at high speeds in busy town centres.

Mr Swann has written to the PSNI District Commander and the Chief Executive of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council to raise concerns regarding pedestrian safety and the management of public spaces.

Privately owned e-scooters are currently illegal to use on any public road, footpath or park in Northern Ireland. Despite this, their use has increased, leading to safety concerns for pedestrians, particularly the elderly and those with limited mobility.

Robin Swann MP said:

"Constituents have raised concerns about feeling vulnerable on our footpaths due to e-scooters being used recklessly. This is a hazard that must be addressed through better awareness and cooperation before a serious accident occurs."

"While laws have changed elsewhere, these vehicles are for private land use only in Northern Ireland. I want to see a coordinated effort from the police and the Council to ensure the public understands the current restrictions."

In his correspondence, Mr Swann requested an update on the work of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

Mr Swann added:

"I am calling for the use of clear signage in our parks and town centres to remind riders of the rules. Our footpaths must be a safe environment for everyone, and I look forward to working with the PSNI and the Council to address these concerns."
