Robin Swann MP has welcomed news that Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is set to use only low-noise fireworks at all future events.

Council officers have recommended the approval of a new protocol that will apply to council-run events, council-funded projects and third-party events held at council facilities. The Council has also been recommended to approve a public awareness campaign highlighting the impact of loud fireworks on children, pets and livestock.

Mr Swann has been a vocal advocate on this issue since November 2025. He previously wrote to the Council to highlight the distress loud displays cause to vulnerable residents and animals, and he warmly welcomed the initial motion brought before the Council in January 2026.

Commenting on the progress, Robin Swann MP said:

"This is an important step forward and I am pleased to see the Council taking this issue seriously. For many people, including vulnerable and elderly residents, pet owners and farmers, traditional fireworks can be a source of significant anxiety rather than enjoyment.

"By shifting to low-noise alternatives and updating grant funding criteria, the Council is ensuring that local celebrations are more inclusive and less disruptive. The proposed awareness campaign is also an important to help the public better understand the impact that loud noise has on domestic animals, local wildlife and vulnerable people.

"I have been raising these concerns for some time, and it is great to see such positive progress being made in Antrim and Newtownabbey."
