Robin Swann MP has welcomed a commitment from Health Minister Mike Nesbitt MLA to prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of families caring for children with life-limiting or terminal illnesses. Responding to a letter from Mr Swann, the Minister acknowledged the "profound emotional and psychological strain" placed on parents and siblings during such difficult circumstances.
The Minister confirmed that work is already underway across Northern Ireland to strengthen psychological support and ensure it is aligned with the regional Mental Health Strategy. This includes enhancing the Family Support NI website to serve as a comprehensive regional directory for emotional and financial advice, as well as improving pathways so families can access support based on their specific assessed needs.
Commenting on the Minister's response, Mr Swann said:
"While clinical care for the child is paramount, the mental health of the wider family must not be overlooked. Parents and siblings carry an immense burden, and it is essential that the health service remains responsive and compassionate to their needs. I appreciate the Minister's encouraging response."
The Department of Health has also pledged to monitor a current review in England and Wales regarding the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill to see how emerging evidence might inform future work in Northern Ireland. While the Minister noted significant financial pressures currently facing the health service, he reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that families receive holistic and effective support. Mr Swann will continue to advocate for these vulnerable families to ensure their needs remain an integral consideration for the Department.
