South Antrim MP Robin Swann has welcomed a response from the Minister for Local Transport, Lilian Greenwood MP, regarding the progress of the motor insurance taskforce.
The Minister confirmed the taskforce is focusing on driving down claim costs by rooting out inefficiencies and reducing opportunities for fraud and theft to stabilise premiums. The update also highlighted the new Road Safety Strategy and a consultation on tougher penalties for those driving without insurance or a licence in England.
While welcoming these steps, Mr Swann stressed that the publication of a report cannot be the end of the process.
"I am pleased the taskforce has identified the inefficiencies and safety issues that push up costs for motorists. However, the government must not stop their work on this now that a report has been published. We need to see these actions translate into lower premiums for drivers who are struggling with the current cost of insurance."
The Minister’s response noted that unique features of the Northern Ireland market, including road safety and judicial costs, remain devolved matters for the NI Executive.
Mr Swann added:
"Addressing the high cost of car insurance requires effort in both Westminster and Stormont. While the Department for Transport tackles UK-wide issues like fraud, the Northern Ireland Executive must address the specific regional factors that keep our costs high. I will continue to press both the government and the Executive to work together to ensure NI motorists get a fair deal."
