South Antrim MP Robin Swann has welcomed a recent update from Health Minister Mike Nesbitt MLA regarding the future of the Muckamore Abbey Hospital site having raised this issue with the Minister at the start of this month.
The Minister has committed to ensuring that all decisions about the Muckamore site reflect system need and demonstrate value for money. Crucially, the Minister stated that future plans must contribute positively to the future shape of health and social care provision.
Mr Swann also welcomed the Minister’s support for a proposal allowing the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) to use part of the site. Confirmation has been received that the Belfast Trust has agreed in principle to let NIMDTA use the Moyla Building, which is currently used as a Day Centre, once it becomes vacant. A memorandum is set to be agreed between NIMDTA and the Trust for a 12-month rolling contract.
The Minister has given his support to this proposal as it will maintain a presence on the site and assist in securing the location in the short to medium term. The move is also intended to better serve the needs of NIMDTA.
Commenting on the update, Mr Swann said:
"It is vital that the Muckamore site continues to be utilised by our health service, so I am pleased to see a clear commitment from the Minister that its future use will be driven by the actual needs of our healthcare system.
"The agreement in principle for NIMDTA to occupy the Moyla Building is a sensible step forward. It ensures the site remains active and secure in the short to medium term while providing a suitable base for medical and dental training. I look forward to seeing how this site can continue to contribute positively to the future of health and social care provision in Northern Ireland."
The Health Minister has confirmed he will keep Mr Swann informed as this work progresses.
